AK wrb everyone,
This might seem like an odd post on this platform, but I feel compelled to share my story with my fellow Sufi’s or enthusiasts.
The content of this post might feel a little cringeworthy at first, but alhumdullilah as the Prophet (pbuh) said “My poverty is my pride” so I don’t feel ashamed to knock on the door to your heart.
I was inspired by Rumi to give up my materialistic lifestyle and embark on the Sufi path to God. I’m putting Rumi’s teachings into practice and the past four years have been the most fruitful years of my life. In the following passage Mawlana Shams Tabrizi directs lovers in his Maqalat pg 113-115 (tras. Rumi & Me by Chittick pg 182) to give up materialistic pursuits and live a life of poverty and austerity.
“I say ‘This is the Path of God. Ofcourse, it goes byway of Aksaray.* And that is to pass over the bridge of ‘Struggle with your posessions and your souls [Quran 9:41]. First, give away your possessions, and after that, there’s much work to do.”
I have given up materialistic pursuits and I don’t work for money so I’m living solely on alms as a Dervish (aka Fakir). I’m in need to pay for essential needs such as rent, utility bills, groceries etc. I can’t claim to be the most deserving of your generosity. I’m an abled middle-aged man who quit his corporate job four years ago to live a life of poverty and austerity. I’m voluntarily poor in order to live a selfless life and struggle against the selfishness of my Nafs that’s full of greed and base desires. I’m also struggling against the dark force within me (aka Satan) that’s responsible for dark emotions such as jealousy, fear, anger, spite, vengeance, self-pity, stubbornness, doubt and despair.
My truth dwells in your heart. If this plea makes you tear up then please help me in my endeavor to reach my beloved and may God bless you with tenderness in your heart so you can come closer to the source of all love which is God.
