بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
Praise be to God who opens sealed hearts through the remembrance of His name, who lifts the veils of defects through His righteousness, who purifies the innermost nature of hearts to confer upon them His own mysterious Self, who reveals wonders from the world of His power, and who increases the signs of abundance for those who are grateful to Him! I praise God for having made me one of those affirming His Oneness, and I thank Him, asking His grace and increased abundance. I also ask God's blessings on our master Muhammad, the noblest of His servants, and on his family and companions, the possessors of great virtue and honor! (Ibn Ata Allah)
The present discussion forum was designed to establish communication between people who possess an interest in and inclination toward Sufism (tasawwuf), the esoteric and mystical tradition of Islam. According to the contemporary scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr, "The Sufi tradition contains a vast metaphysical and cosmological set of doctrines elaborated over a long period by Sufi teachers and masters of gnosis. It contains methods of spiritual realization that address nearly all the different spiritual possibilities on the levels of action, love, and knowledge. It has preserved over many centuries and going back to the Prophet a regular chain of transmission of initiatic power (walayah/wilayah) and the grace (al-barakah) necessary for the spiritual journey. And above all, it can enable men and women to reach the state of sanctity."
The topics for discussion include but are not limited to the Islamic tradition as the framework and foundation of orthodox Sufism, Sufi doctrines and contemplative methods, and the various stages and waystations of the spiritual path. Included also are separate sections devoted to several of the principal Sufi Orders. One of our goals is to have each of these latter sections moderated by a participant or representative of a contemporary branch of each Order. Finally, the last section allows dedicated space for sharing quotations encompassed by the three primary dimensions of Sufism.
The conditions for participation in our forum include maintaining an attitude of courtesy and respect toward other participants regardless of individual backgrounds and interests. Sufism is a vast tradition which encompasses many different branches and perspectives. What is most important for our purposes is to endeavor to represent ourselves in a dignified manner and communicate in such a way that we pay homage to the etiquette (adab) and chivalry (futuwwah) of the tradition which serves as our focus.
